What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a commonly performed procedure used to treat unsightly superficial blue or red spider veins located on the legs. Chemicals known as sclerosants are injected into the vein, triggering a reaction that causes the vein to shrink and disappear. Several treatments are indicated, depending on the size and number of the veins being treated.
What happens during the procedure?
Sclerotherapy is performed in the office without the need for anesthesia. The medication is injected with a tiny needle into the vein, which causes the vein to close, shrink, and then disappear.
What is expected before the treatment?
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin and other blood thinning agents should be avoided 5 days before and after your treatment to minimize bruising. Shower and wash your legs thoroughly on the day of your treatment.
What is expected after the treatment?
The injection sites may be red, bruised and slightly swollen immediately after the treatment. A pressure bandage is applied following the treatment and is recommended for 1-2 hours after the injections. Support stockings are recommended to improve the results of your treatment and to prevent the reoccurrence of new spider vessels.
What side effects are associated with sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is considered an exceptionally safe treatment option for leg veins. Common side effects may include bruising, temporary pain, skin discoloration, and lumps that may persist for weeks after treatment of larger varicose veins.
I find everyone at the practice very professional and friendly, I had no pain from my procedure and I was delighted not to have to look at that ugly patch of blue veins clustered under my knee!
I was given a very clear explanation before and during the procedure, and I am very pleased with the results. The recovery was shorter than expected and would absolutely recommend this practice to anyone.
