Melanoma

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It develops mostly is sun exposed skin. If left untreated it can be fatal. When detected early melanoma can be cured.

Melanoma usually evolves from changing moles (nevi). Routine self-examination using the ABCDE criteria can be life-saving. You should look for: A-Asymmetry (one half different from other half), B-Border (irregularities of the edges), C-Color (variations in color), D-Diameter (larger than a pencil eraser) and E-Evolving (enlarging in size or changing in color).

Severe sunburns in childhood can lead to a greater risk of developing melanoma in later life. Immediate family members of patients with melanoma should be screened more frequently due to genetic predisposition. When detected early melanoma can be effectively treated in the office with surgical excision.

Skin Cancer Screening

There are few areas in medicine where preventative health screening is more important than with melanoma. Because moles are potentially linked to skin cancer, a dermatologic evaluation is one common method of detection. This is especially true a person who already has multiple moles, or if there is a family history of skin cancer.

A skin cancer screening is a visual inspection of your skin by a dermatologist or other licensed medical professional. No blood work or radiological imaging is conducted.
Skin cancer screenings are also an opportunity to inquire about other rashes, growths or procedures about which you may have questions.

Do not wait until a suspicious mole doubles in size or bleeds or becomes painful to schedule your skin cancer screening. If skin cancers are detected and removed early, high cure rates are attainable.
